Congratulations to the 2009 Award Winners!
On Saturday, October 10, the Maryland Parents Association presented their annual awards as part of the Family Weekend celebration. The Outstanding Faculty Educator and Outstanding Academic Advisor awards recognize and honor individuals for demonstrating a deep commitment to providing an exemplary educational experience for University of Maryland students. Nominations were solicited from current undergraduate students and were then reviewed by the Association’s Awards and Recognition Committee. The recipients received a plaque and a $1000 prize, and the students who wrote the winning nominations each received a $200 award.
Dr. Laure Brooks: Outstanding Faculty Educator
Dr. Laure Brooks is an Instructor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. She teaches the undergraduate research methods course as well as courses on law enforcement administration, juvenile delinquency and introduction to criminal justice. Dr. Brooks was the recipient of the 1999 College of Behavioral and Social Sciences Excellence in Teaching Mentorship Award. She received her Ph.D., M.A. and B.A degrees from the University of Maryland.
Dr. Brooks is an incredibly dedicated teacher and mentor. She engages students with her captivating teaching style, creates a challenging learning environment, and takes a keen interest in their lives both inside and outside of the classroom. Her students note that it is evident she has a love for teaching and genuine concern for students.

Dr. Philip DeShongr: Outstanding Academic Advisor
Dr. Philip DeShong is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He has received numerous honors and awards for his scholarship and teaching, including the 1996 University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award and the 2007 University of Maryland Regents’ Award for Distinguished Service. Dr. DeShong holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and a Doctor of Science degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. DeShong is recognized by students as an excellent advisor and mentor. He takes an avid interest in students, encourages excellence, promotes personal and academic development, and goes “above and beyond” in helping to students to achieve their full potential as well as prepare for life after Maryland.
